4 Days Off the Grid in West Puerto Rico

7 Days 15 Activities

San Juan is cool until you spend half your trip sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic or paying $20 for a diluted cocktail at a tourist trap. The move for the boys? Fly straight into BQN (Rafael Hernández Airport) on the west coast, and hit the actual surf towns. You can also use my 5-day itinerary for Aguadilla to plan your trip here.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

2
BQN Airport Exit

Aeropuerto Internacional Rafael Hernández

Roovio

Landed, walked past the rideshare chaos, and grabbed our rental sedan directly outside BQN. Having wheels out west is non-negotiable if you actually want to get around.

Pier Dives at Crash Boat

Crash Boat Beach

Roovio

Drove 10 minutes down to Crash Boat Beach. Skimmed past the main parking, ordered $3 fried pastelillos from a beach vendor, and ran up the concrete pier to hurl ourselves into the turquoise water.

Ride to Punta Borinquen Lighthouse Ruins

Faro de Punta Borinquen

Roovio

Called a local cab to get us over to the abandoned 19th-century lighthouse ruins. The crumbling brick backdrop over the Atlantic reef is wild.

Sunset Drinks at El Parterre

El Parterre

Roovio

Pulled up to an open-air food truck near town, grabbed ice-cold $2 Medallas, and watched the sun drop below the horizon right over the water.

3
Bakery Run

La Gran Victoria Bakery

Roovio

Stopped by a local panadería for iced black coffees and warm, pressed ham-and-cheese mallorcas.

Cliff Jumps at Gozalandia

Gozalandia Waterfalls Campground

Roovio

Drove 30 minutes inland to the San Sebastián jungle pools. The upper falls at Gozalandia have jumping spots and rope-swing areas, with plenty of rocks and pools to explore.

Mofongo at Jobos Beach

Playa Jobos

Roovio

Cut across to Isabela for lunch. Loaded up on garlic-shrimp mofongo right on the boardwalk while watching local surfers shred the outer reef break.

Nightfall at Sandy Beach

Tamboo Rincon

Roovio

Wrapped up the day down in Rincón. Caught live music and drank passionfruit margaritas on the outdoor deck at Tamboo while the tide rolled in.

4
Coastal Horseback Ride

Tropical Trail Rides

Roovio

Booked a morning ride along Aguadilla's northern beaches. Trotting through coastal palm groves onto deserted stretches of sand was low-key one of the sickest highlights of the entire trip.

Acai & Fish Tacos

Shacks Beach

Roovio

Refueled near Shacks Beach with massive acai bowls, cold brew, and fresh mahi-mahi tacos alongside local surfers.

Hiking to Survival Beach

Survival Beach

Roovio

Trekked the rugged coastal trail out to Survival Beach. The massive limestone rock arches carved out by Atlantic waves look like another planet.

Calle Tamarindo Nightlife

Calle Tamarindo

Roovio Google

Headed into town where locals actually hang out. Unpretentious dive bars, heavy salsa music, cheap drinks, and zero tourist crowds.

5
Glass-Clear Snorkeling at Peña Blanca

Peña Blanca Beach

Roovio

Spent our final morning at Peña Blanca Beach. The water was calm, so we swam 20 feet off the sand and luckily spotted wild sea turtles.

Final Street Food Fix

Cocoloba at Crash Boat - Blue Sand Collection

Roovio

Stopped at a roadside spot for one last round of crispy beef alcapurrias and fresh coconut water.

BQN Airport Drop-off

Aeropuerto Internacional Rafael Hernández

Roovio

Turned in the car keys 10 minutes away at BQN and boarded our flight back, sunburnt, exhausted, and zero regrets about skipping San Juan.
