4 Days Off the Grid in West Puerto Rico

It is what it is. It's not horrible, but could use updating. Because it is a smaller airport I expect things go according to plans most of the time, but I'm sure if there are issues on the other end and nothing to do here, there'll more than likely be delays. There are a few food locations, but I didn't check them out. Everyone was very friendly. I do like the old world charm about it. As some mentioned, the bathrooms could use a little updating, but in saying g that, wouldn't want to lose its old world charm.

Aguadilla such a small and welcoming airport. Once you landed there’s no gate so you have to walk down a ramp to the middle of the landing road. Such a special and fun experience.

It's a small airport, but convenient for those who are from the north west and south west part of the island. Away from the hassles of San Juan Airport and traffic. Great area to arrive and enjoy the tourism and local activities.

Market Stand #2 – Buyer Beware If you're planning to buy souvenirs from Market Stand #2, especially the 3D-printed items, inspect them carefully before you pay. Once you leave the register, you may be on your own. I purchased a 3D-printed souvenir, and after paying I noticed it was broken. The item had been kept behind the register instead of on the display shelf, which now makes me wonder if the damage was already known. When I brought it to the cashier's attention, she admitted she didn't know much about the products and had to call another employee. That employee then attempted to contact the manager or owner several times, but no one answered or returned the calls. My flight was about to board, and all I kept hearing was, "I tried to call, but no one answered." There was no effort to resolve the situation, no one with the authority to make a decision, and no concern for the customer, even though it was clear the item had not been damaged by me. I ended up losing $40 on a broken souvenir. Mistakes happen, but what was most disappointing was the complete lack of management support and customer service. Employees were left without the authority to fix a problem, and management was simply unavailable. That sends the message that once they've made the sale, customer satisfaction is no longer a priority. I'd also like to clarify something about Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla. Many travelers criticize the airport because it is small and has limited restaurants and shopping. However, that's not really a fair criticism. Aguadilla is not a large, full-service international hub. It primarily serves domestic and regional flights and was developed from the former Ramey Air Force Base. The airport has gradually expanded over the years, but it remains a smaller regional airport designed to provide a convenient alternative to San Juan for travelers in western Puerto Rico. The airport's size and limited amenities are understandable. What isn't understandable is poor customer service. Regardless of the airport's size, every business operating there should stand behind the products it sells and make customer service a priority. This version is professional, factual, and emphasizes that the real issue wasn't the airport—it was the vendor's lack of accountability and management support.

2 bit tiny airport nearest to my home. Used to be Ramey Airforce Base. Very limited daily flights, dates, or airline choices. Jet Blue, Jet Blue, or Jet Blue I think. Oh, and god forbid, if your flight is delayed or canceled there's no cure. You're simply screwed. San Juan is pricier and a 3 hr drive from my side of the island, but after my experience last week, I'm reconsidering choosing BQN anytime soon. The TSA and local staff truly don't give a shit. AND IT'S OBVIOUS!!

Incredible beach for swimming and snorkeling. Parking fills up fast so be sure to get there early! You can also park along the road leading to the lot for free, if you don't mind a walk down to the beach.

Wow! Wow! This beach is absolutely amazing!!! So beautiful. There is not enought shade, they dont rent umbrella nor chairs, however the color of the water is turquoise and crystal clear. You can see on the background an inlet with mountain. The cost to go in is $9.00

Fun beach with clean sand and clear water. The highlight of the beach is jumping off the pier and snorkling around the pier to see all of the fishes! However, parking is crazy and I wouldn't bother visiting on the weekends. The food stands here are also insanely over priced. I would recommend visiting!

Arrive early for limited parking or prepare for a long walk. Lots of beach area and rocks and 2 caves if you can find them. It does tend to get crowded though. Definitely a highlight of my trip.

Excellent beach. Gets crowded quick. Went on a Monday and it was packed by 11 am. Parking was up the street quite a bit by that point. Even with all of the people there, you still had a decent amount of space on the beach and the water wasn't packed either. Very nice beach. Loved being able to jump off the pier too.

Wonderful for the whole family. It was $6usd per ticket and $3usd for parking (as of 8/7/2024). Includes kid's splash pad water park, the aquarium, interactive ship model structures, and the lighthouse. There is a small food stand with plenty of covered seating.

Cabo Rojo salt flats and lighthouse. Beautiful, peaceful place. Getting is a slight hike by foot. At the start of the walk you would have to pass bad odors and trash left by people that have no sense of values. Other than that the natural reserve is a very special place and spiritual.

It is a nice and beautiful beach to surf, relax, and hike. Really breezy. However, there is a lot of currents to venture in the deep ocean…. People that love the beach are the ones taking care of the area what I applaud. One star less as the road is not on the best condition to drive if you don’t have a larger vehicle or truck.

National Guards Lighthouse that was built as the new Lighthouse after the old Lighthouse was destroyed by large waves after an offshore earthquake struck. My problem with this location is that it's always closed off with locked gate and you can't get close enough to take nice pictures or walk the grounds. The old Lighthouse still stands and known as the Ruins of the Lighthouse not to far from this location, about a 5 minute drive. I highly recommend to visit the old Lighthouse ruins, very nice scenic for photoshoots.

As an island tour guide from San Juan this was my first time visiting. Have to recognize, the place was majestic, clean, had it's historical aspects and local food kiosks for the community to enjoy the breathtaking sunset views. Don't miss out!!

Missed my 6th grade trip here at the end of 1970s and stayed in my mind. Was so happy to finally close that chapter. Nice historical place and the park is awesome. Went to a few places around and they were all worth it.

Great donuts and other breakfast pastries. They were happy to explain all of the pastries to us and spoke perfect English. They were very friendly. We will definitely go again. We went for breakfast, but they also have lunch foods including sandwiches.

The best bakery in Aguadilla, hands down! I ate there three to four times a week last summer. Get salami sandwich for lunch or sausage for breakfast. Their pastries are amazing as well!

Wow! Super beautiful. Make sure to bring some quality shoes and be ready to get "a little" wet. My kids had a blast swimming in the areas and I loved hiking the trails. Excellent place to visit in Puerto Rico definitely recommend. Their are some elevation changes and the staff are really good and will warn you if weather is changing.

I used to come here back when the road wasn’t paved and we had to walk through trees, mud, and grass. Now the whole area is paved and under surveillance, and the entrance cost was ten dollars. The waterfall is amazing — there are two sections here. The main waterfall has even been used in movies like A Perfect Getaway, and the second waterfall is about a 10–20 minute walk depending on your pace. It’s a great place to spend the day with friends, family, or even alone while enjoying the fresh, cold water.

I had Google Maps taking me to this place instead of the actual Gozalandia Waterfalls we were hoping for. Although they connect with each other through a treacherous trail, they are not the same place. This place is a campgrounds. Be careful not to get confused because the attendant will charge $5 per person to access the facilities and will not mention you the actual place with all the amenities expected. This campgrounds have a souvenir/snacks shop and clean restrooms. The road to the waterfalls is not paved, but it's not difficult to walk. All of this area has plenty of lush vegetation with great photo/video spots. You would not be disappointed if you are planning to camp there. Highly recommended for that purpose.

What a very nice welcome. A lady my age welcome the three of us with open arms even though we had arrived after hours. We weren't permitted to go to the falls because it was such a hike to get there. However the lady was more than happy to allow us to come engage with her peacocks and miniature chickens and baby goats. All the animals had names and came when called to. Such a very nice welcome I would recommend going here solely on this experience.

We had a great experience the day that we were there. If you pay for the amenities you have access to a small shower and a bathroom so that you can change or use the bathroom when you're done. I will definitely suggest you use a good non-slip shoes and make sure that the weather it's in your favor, Not too much rain so that you can have the best experience in this place.

Beautiful beach with a wide variety of on-site food options. Good for snorkeling and surfing and wading into the water. Like any beach in PR parking is limited but spots available alongside the road.

Still my favorite spot so far for the variety, the majestic landscape, and the diversity of the water features. 1 side of the rock structures have crashing waves for great photos. The other side has a large calm area that families can enjoy. Great place for special occasion photos too.

Jobos Beach is easily my favorite beach anywhere, and I travel quite a bit. It’s one of those rare places that has everything you could want without feeling overdeveloped. The beach itself is beautiful, with soft, clean sand and incredibly clear water. There’s a long stretch of shallow water that’s perfect for swimming, floating, and families with children, while farther out the waves provide excellent conditions for surfers. One of the things I appreciate most is how convenient everything is. There are several vendors renting umbrellas and chairs, plenty of surf shops, and a great selection of restaurants and beach bars just steps away when you need a drink or a bite to eat. Parking has never been an issue either, with both free street parking and affordable local lots nearby. I’ve visited beaches in many places, but I keep coming back to Jobos. It has a relaxed Puerto Rican vibe, beautiful scenery, and something for everyone. If you’re visiting the northwest coast of Puerto Rico, this is a beach you shouldn’t miss.

I can not stress this enough: KEEP PUERTO RICO BEACHES CLEAN PLEASE. Jobos is absolutely stunning and we want it to stay that way. This is our home away from home. You can find it all here. Restaurants, bars, chair rentals, surf board rentals, beach gift shop. The water is so clean.

Very busy and popular spot.. lots of street parking.. someone told me if you have one wheel on the road when you're parked you'll get a ticket.. lots of ships. Narrow beach area. Sometimes rough . Lots of shops and eateries

Food here is delicious! We had the veggie burger, fish tacos, pimiento relleno and the tamboo salad - all were delicious but the veggie burger really surprised us! Texture was great and tasted incredible. Great view too. Drinks were also so good and service was the best we’ve experienced in Rincon. Everyone was very friendly and attentive.

The view was the main attraction. Aside from that it was pretty mediocre. Service wasn’t that great and we felt weird vibes from the waitress (maybe the big group overwhelmed her?). They ended up over charging us on a bunch of items but it was my fault for not noticing. For the price the food could’ve been better, went to many restaurants on our trip and this was the least memorable. If you want a good atmosphere come for drinks, the food was whatever and expensive.

I didn’t not stay so I can’t speak about the rooms. I ate at the restaurant with a large party of family. The drinks were good overall. The I didn’t hear any complaints at all. The food was a different story. Several members of our group reported less than enjoyable food experiences. One person said that the hamburger didn’t taste right. I had the Plantain baskets with pulled pork appetizer, and the group shared the fried food platter of appetizers. All the fried food was very greasy. Obviously the oil wasn’t hot enough. The plantain baskets were soaked in oil. The flavor of the pulled pork was very good, but there were bones in the pork. One person in the group had the salad and reported that it was very good. The worst part of all was waking in the wee hours with food poisoning. Go for drinks, but I wouldn’t recommend it for eating because the quality and flavoring were very spotty.

We have been coming to Tamboo almost from its origin. The food has gotten better from excellent to outstanding. You can't beat the view, you are right on the ocean. The service is welcoming and efficient. We have tried almost all the menu. I highly recommend the fish and seafood, although the burgers are excellent as well.

We are staying across the street from Tamboo. On our first night we decided to go for dinner. I was lucky that the pan seared snapper was on special. Served on a bed of the recommended Puerto Rican root mash! It was probably the best fish meal I have ever eaten and I have travelled extensively!! A++++!!! Service was first class too!

Amazing experience! The staff was wonderful, there was no rush. Everything was explained perfectly, how to ride the horse, how to control the horse. The Horses were very well taken care of. The trail was beautiful, clean and the perfect amount of time. Our tour guide was amazing, she took pics of everyone and was very knowledgeable

Such a memorable part of my birthday trip. This was not my first time riding horses but it was my husband's. The guides were very friendly and helpful and made us both feel right at home. The secluded beach we rode on was stunning as well as the forested areas. Our guide, Joe, was great and powered through even when he wasn't feeling great. I would totally rebook this again next time we visit PR!

My family and I enjoyed our ride with tropical trail rides! My 10 yr old on Stella and 7 yr old on Ginger felt comfortable the whole time and even trotted! They kept asking to trot more! This was their second time riding and the beach is breathtaking and beautiful. It’s Definitely worth trying this place out and our guide was great with all of us!

Beautiful trail ride with an amazing guide! We rode Galente and Smokey. We saw two beaches and an iguana through the forest. The guide cared about our safety but let us just enjoy the ride which we appreciated. Beautiful property and you can tell the horses are well taken care of. We will be back! HIGHLY recommend! 🇵🇷🐴💕

We had the best time! The horses were great too. Our guide Alicia was awesome and gave us good directions guiding the horses and even took pictures for us. We loved the mixture of riding along the beach and then getting to trot through the trees. 100% would recommend!

Although this is a beautiful spot to spend a day and/or afternoon it is not kids friendly. The water is too rough and there are too many rocks. There are a handful of areas where one can swim "safely" without being pulled by the rip current. Besides that, this is perfect spot to catch a wonderful sunset or if you like surfing then this is the spot for you.

Love Loved this beach. It is truly for advanced swimmers and experienced surfers! The waves and undercurrents are not for the weak! The shallow shores worked well for me as well as just lounging on the sand. There are places to rent almost anything you may need as a traveler. I did not expect so many tourists. We had a great day visiting this lovely beach! ~TAL

Absolutely loved this beach. The access is down a long road and through a narrow passage way. It then opens up to a relatively secluded beach. It was beautiful, the water was great, and we were the only ones on the beach. I highly suggest this beach if you want to avoid crowds. No bathrooms or food though. The parking is in this little half circle thing outside of the neighborhood. There is a sign and parking is free.

Incredible views and beach at about 1 mile. Wear good footwear with good grip; very technical footing requiring a lot of attention! but it’s a relatively short trail. Follow orange/red trail markers and you’re fine. Lots of cool flora and fauna along the trail. Survival Beach Sea caves are majestic and gorgeous. Strong current at nearby beaches, we dunked but didn’t swim deep. After hike, it’s fun to watch the talented surfers at Surfer beach where you park.

Absolutely beautiful beach! The hike to get to it is intense but so worth it. There are no public restrooms or amenities so come prepared. The sand is so soft, there are some shallow sections of water that are great for kids to wade around in. We found endless shells and sea glass. We were there at high tide so we didn’t get to enjoy the huge rock pass-throughs but it was still worth it. 10/10 recommend.

The trail to Survival Beach doesn’t begin like a hike. It feels like stepping through a portal where Puerto Rico whispers “Ready? Let’s see what you’re made of.” The jungle greets you with a curtain of green, vines looping like curious serpents, sunlight flickering through leaves like a thousand tiny spotlights. The path is more suggestion than trail, nudging you over roots, under rock shelves, and along the rugged coastline while the Atlantic tosses white foam tantrums below. Salt hangs in the air. Your pulse plays its own drumline. And the breeze feels like a dare. Just when your calves start sending polite complaints to your brain, the trees part like a secret being shared and you’re suddenly standing in one of the most cinematic scenes the island has hidden up its sleeve. Survival Beach. Massive boulders loom like stranded giants. Sea-carved caves crouch in sandy silence. And the ocean rolls in and out like a breathing sky-blue giant. This isn’t a beach you simply visit. You earn it. Drop your pack, kick off your shoes, and let the wind baptize you as a card-carrying adventurer. Every step back to civilization carries a little swagger, because you know what most don’t: Puerto Rico still has wild places, and you walked straight into one. A hike. A challenge. A reward carved by waves and time. Survival Beach is more than a destination. It’s a full-body reminder that life tastes better with a little effort and a splash of saltwater magic 🌴🌊🏞️

You definitely earn 😏 your survival beach legs with this trip. I suggest when you get to the first path to the water walk the rocks. Be careful 🧐, but it alot easier than walking the trail.

The information about the trail is mixed, some describe it as very dangerous, and I am not sure why. It may depend on conditions, not sure. We went on low tide, after the night of rain. It was a bit slippery, but still doable in sneakers (nor even hiking boots). I wouldn't go in flip-flops, but I saw people who do. You will climb up and down, but not a lot of elevation and the trip is 30 minutes total. You will walk on uneven trail, step over a rocks/branches and climb a small rock formation using natural, yet well-defined steps. The trail is marked clearly.

Killer spot, not much parking but we were lucky enough to get 1 of the 2 spots. Killer cliff views and a great spot to watch sunset. Waves are too big for the kids to play, but a great spot to explore.

A true hidden gem. Waves are rough and high, but the snorkeling is well worth the trip. I advise entering through the ruins on the north and driving through the dirt roads towards this beach. They'll be plenty of parking that way 4x4 recommened, but not required. If you enter the GOOGLE maps way parking is very limited (5cars) and there's a house on right that charges for parking. NEVER PAY for parking in Puerto Rico beaches, these beaches belong to the people of Puerto Rico! Enjoy !

Didnt get on the water unfortunately, but the view was majestic. Locals said there is a bunch of sea turtles, tropical fish, and so much more. Recommend going here to get in the water and for the beautiful canopies.

Excellent beach for Snorkeling! Limited room for lounging. Gets deep pretty quickly and many rocks. Not ideal for young children, barbecues or laying about. If you want to see the sea life, then come here. No free parking and don't be tempted to park on road, tickets on every car on our return. Private parking available at $5. Just pay it. I was lucky to see plenty of sea life including a turtle. A good few sea urchins so be aware of putting your hands in unsuspecting holes! Personally I thought it was worth the $5 to park. Get some good Snorkeling in and then move on for lunch.

Cocoloba is an incredible place to stay. It is right on the beach and the property is impeccable. 3 good sized bedrooms all with air conditioning. Beautiful, spacious and well-equipped kitchen and large family room. It also has parking for 2 cars and a large porch with plenty of seating. Next door there is also a bar/restaurant with delicious food and drinks. We will definitely be returning.

We loved staying at the Casita on Crash Boat Beach. It was beautiful, and we were literally on the sand... No need to even get in a car once you get there. Also, I have to express how amazing their manager Coral is. Not only knowledgeable, kind, and efficient but she blew me away. I am disabled, and I asked her if she could provide a shower chair when I got there, upon arrival there was not only a shower chair, but there was also a walker. In addition, they provided something so I could get not only on the beach but float on the water as well. Truly Heaven. I feel blessed. I definitely will be back. I was worried that four days would be too much on my body. In in the end, it wasn't enough and I was very sad to leave. Make sure to get a Casita that has a view of the beach so you can just sit on your porch or even on your bed to see the beautiful blue ocean. I do need to warn you that the weekends can get busy and the roosters can wake you up but it was fun to see liveliness of the weekend and the mellowness of the weekday.The food at the Crash boat bar (Coco Lobo) was also very good. The chimichurri for the skirt steak was probably the best I've ever had. Also, the empanadas were delicious. So much fun I'm sad that I'm home. But I have extremely fond memories and I will be back.

The food was delicious and with view of the beautiful sandy beach it was a perfect dinner spot, not to mention the sunset. The restaurant has bar seating, high tops and picnic table in a grassy area. They also have yard games to play. During this Covid time, they are open and practice social distancing. When entering, the take your temp and spray your hands with a disinfectant.

We enjoyed sunset drinks and dinner after spending the afternoon at Crash Boat (one of the prettiest beaches in Puerto Rico). The service was friendly, warm and efficient and we found the menu to be innovative and delicious. The drinks were also great. Loved this place! We definitely plan to return!

El Chiringuito y el Cutty Sark Coconut Highball están súper bueno y no son tan caro. If you’re into tropical or sweeter drinks try the two cocktails mentioned above, they’re excellent and the bartender says they are the two best drinks on their menu that barely anyone ever orders. They’re not very expensive and are worth trying at least once.
