7 Days 3-Day Mayagüez Itinerary
I had a few days off in June and wanted to spend them somewhere warm, so Puerto Rico came to mind. San Juan was the easy choice, but I kept thinking, why not see somewhere beyond the usual tourist spots? That's what took me to Mayagüez on the west coast. I stayed for three days, checking out downtown, beaches, local food, historic spots, and a few places around western Puerto Rico.

Luis Munoz Marin International Airport
Roovio — After around 5 hours of travel from Texas, I landed at San Juan Airport. From there, I took a taxi toward Mayagüez, which was my base for the next three days.
I was genuinely surprised by how pleasant and well-organized the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport was! From the moment we arrived, everything went incredibly smoothly. Absolutely all the staff we interacted with were extremely friendly, helpful and polite. The airport is very well organized, and you can tell that everyone knows exactly what they are doing. When we arrived, our checked luggage came out surprisingly quickly, which was a huge plus after a long flight. On departure, we waited no more than about 10 minutes to check in and drop off our luggage, and the security control was just as fast and efficient. For such a busy international airport, I was honestly impressed by how little time we spent waiting. I also really liked the area after security, especially the Duty Free section. There are many shops selling traditional Puerto Rican souvenirs and local products, which gives the airport a much more authentic and welcoming feeling. It was actually nice to have some time to browse and pick up a few last souvenirs before leaving. Overall, this was one of the most pleasant airport experiences we have had. Friendly staff, excellent organization, quick baggage handling and a nice selection of traditional shops — everything made the journey much easier and more enjoyable. I would happily travel through this airport again! ✈️🇵🇷🌴
One of my least favorite airports. The restaurants are a mix of American fast food: dominoes, popeyes; international fare: ramen, Spanish; and gas station food. And it's so expensive. Yes airports are expensive, but it's expensive and unsatisfying. Then the duty free is a waste of time. You can get the same items on the island and just pack it in your bag and save a bunch of money. And the security is super relaxed. I have a subdermal device that always get me pat down. I went through, they asked if I had a necklace, I said yes, and they cleared me. The airport isn't bad, it's just not good and spending time there isn't fun.
I was flying out of Terminal A at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, and honestly the experience getting in was rough. With everything going on around the government shutdown, TSA was extremely slow—long lines and pretty chaotic just to get through the initial checkpoint. Definitely give yourself extra time. The airport itself feels older and a bit worn down. It could really use a refresh. That said, once you’re inside, there are actually a lot of solid food options for breakfast and lunch, plus some good shopping and local snacks. On the bright side, flights seem to run pretty smoothly and leave on time, which helps make up for the hassle getting in. Not my favorite airport, but it gets the job done for the area.
Arriving at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport was a good experience. The airport was clean, organized, and easy to get around. Signs for baggage claim and transportation were clear. My luggage came out quickly, and the whole process was smooth from landing to exit. A nice first impression of Puerto Rico!!
Got to the airport around midnight. Ready to navigate clean airport. Bathroom were clean. Uber pick up was from B 19-20 area. Since landed in PR, its been a great experience.

El Buen Comer Restaurant
Roovio — Google — I went to El Buen Comer for my first meal in Mayagüez and tried a Puerto Rican criollo dish. After the long trip from Texas, I wanted something local rather than a familiar meal.
Plaza Colón
Roovio — Google — After dinner, I walked around downtown Mayagüez for a while and took in the streets and local atmosphere. It was a relaxed way to get my first feel for the city before heading back to TRYP by Wyndham Mayagüez for the night.
Ricomini Bakery
Roovio — Google — I started the morning at Ricomini Bakery with coffee and breakfast before heading into the centro urbano. The cafecito gave me the start I needed before walking around downtown.

Roovio — Google — I walked around Plaza Colón, looked at the buildings around the square, and took a few photos. From here, most of the historic spots in central Mayagüez were close enough to reach on foot.
Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria
Roovio — Google — I walked from Plaza Colón to Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria and spent a little time looking around the cathedral before continuing through downtown.
Teatro Yagüez
Roovio — Google — I walked over to Teatro Yagüez and stopped to see the historic theater. Since it was already nearby, I didn't bother taking a taxi and continued exploring the area on foot.
Restaurante y Tasca La Posada
Roovio — Google — I grabbed lunch at La Posada and went for comida criolla, including mofongo. After walking around in the heat, sitting down for a proper Puerto Rican meal was honestly needed.
Universidad de Puerto Rico Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez
Roovio — Google — I took a taxi from downtown to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. I walked around the campus area for a while and liked seeing a different side of the city after spending the morning around its historic center.
Paseo del Litoral Israel "Shorty" Castro
Roovio — Google — I took another taxi toward the Mayagüez waterfront and spent some time near the coast. I wasn't trying to squeeze another big attraction into the day, so I walked around, took in the evening air, and enjoyed having a slower part of the day.
González Sea Food Restaurant
Roovio — Google — I took a taxi to González Sea Food Restaurant for dinner and ordered seafood with mofongo. After spending most of the day exploring, I was ready for a relaxed dinner before heading back to TRYP by Wyndham Mayagüez for the night.
TRYP by Wyndham Mayaguez
Roovio — Google — I checked out of TRYP by Wyndham Mayagüez and took a taxi toward Rincón for my last full day. I wanted to spend it outside the city and see a little more of the west coast.
Rincón
Roovio — Google — I arrived in Rincón and spent the morning around the town and coastline. Instead of rushing between several beaches, I took my time exploring the area and enjoying the slower pace.
Steps Beach - Reserva Marina Tres Palmas
Roovio — I took a short taxi ride to Steps Beach and spent some time by the water. The beach sits near the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, so I also walked around the coastal area and stopped to take in the views.
We visited steps once in the winter months, but found the waves to be HUGE, so I was determined to come back in the summer months for some snorkeling… I’m so glad we did! The snorkeling was awesome. There is a ton of bright, colorful reef right off shore. We snorkeled for about an hour and saw a turtle as well as a spotted eagle ray. The parking is free but fills up quickly. You can park along the side of the street and walk along the side of the main road before the last turn. There is also a cool little stone labyrinth just outside of the parking lot to the right. Very cool spot!
We came here for snorkeling with my 4 kids and had so much fun, we spent hours snorkeling and viewing the reef. We seen many cool fish. There is very limited parking, upon entering we went to the left and sat in a shaded area. The rocks are slippery upon entering and there are sea urchins in the coral area, though we didn’t see any near the shallow area, that is always a possibility. We were very careful where we stepped and watched out for sea urchins. I’d suggest water shoes and being very careful. The water was absolutely beautiful though.
A really cool beach off the coast of Rincon, we bought some snorkelling gear from the surf shop right up the road and did some snorkelling. There's one sandy drop-off area to the left of the beach entrance that I recommend you use, since the rest of the reef is extremely rocky and you will get injured if you try to enter/exit the water on the rocks. Really cool being able to snorkel with the fish, and the currents are strong but not too strong such that moderate swimmers should be able to snorkel well.
Spent a Sunday at is locally called Steps Beach due to a set of cement steps that are at the edge of the water. Nice beach, very walkable and a popular spot for snorkeling. We did some snorkeling and found it very easy with little surf or waves. Lots of family and kids.
Steps Beach is a breathtaking spot with two faces! When the water is calm, it’s perfect for snorkeling with incredible coral reefs and plenty of colorful fish. When the swell picks up, it turns into a fantastic surf spot. But be careful! The corals are very close to the surface, so you need to be cautious whether you're swimming or surfing. Definitely a must-visit for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts!
Rincón
Roovio — Google — I took a taxi back toward central Rincón and stopped for lunch. I kept it casual, grabbed something local to eat, and spent a little more time around town before heading to the lighthouse.
Faro Punta Higueras
Roovio — From Rincón, I took a taxi to El Faro de Punta Higüero. I walked around the lighthouse area, stayed for the ocean views, and spent some time at the lookout before heading back.
Very clean and pretty area. Very soothing and relaxing to listen to the massive waves crashing. Can not go up into the lighthouse. The woman’s restroom had no teepee! And the big binoculars to pay to look out with where ALL broken and just there for decorations. Regardless it’s a great area for picture taking and walking.
This place offers a beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for taking photos and unwinding.
Cool spot to check out, the lighthouse is pretty cool they have some vendors on site sometimes and the bar at the end is really fun to check out along with the amazing sunset views
It was hot but is Puerto Rico and this beach is always amazing, the beach the view 100%
Its a wonderful spot with lots of views of the ocean.
Rincón
Roovio — Google — I returned to Rincón by taxi and spent the last part of the afternoon around town. I grabbed a cold drink and took one last look around before heading back toward Mayagüez.
TRYP by Wyndham Mayaguez
Roovio — Google — I took a taxi back to Mayagüez, returned to TRYP by Wyndham Mayagüez to collect my bags, and then left for San Juan. My flight from SJU back to Texas was at 12:58 AM, so I allowed enough time for the trip to the airport.
