3-Day Austin Itinerary

AL

6 Days 24 Activities

Austin isn't just tacos, live music, and people wearing cowboy boots like it's a uniform. If you catch the city on the right weekend, you could be watching cars' roar sounds around Circuit of the Americas, cheering with an Austin FC crowd, or finding yourself surrounded by Longhorn fans before a football game. But you don't need a major event to make an Austin itinerary interesting. I wanted three days that felt like Austin, not three days of ticking attractions off a list. So I mixed the big sights with swimming, neighborhoods, Texas history, food, and a few moments where I could simply stop and look around.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Coming from Chicago, I'd land in Austin, grab my luggage, and take a taxi to the hotel. If you're not carrying much, CapMetro's Route 20 also runs from the airport to downtown, so there's no need to automatically pay for a private ride.

Austin Motel

Check in, throw the bags down, and take a few minutes to breathe. After a flight, I don't want my Austin itinerary starting with a museum. I want a shower first.

South Congress Avenue

This was the first place I'd wander. SoCo has the shops, murals, patios, and that slightly chaotic Austin feeling that makes you realize you're not in another generic American downtown. Grab a coffee, look around, and don't rush it.

Barton Springs Pool

Now comes the reward for getting off the plane. I'd head to Barton Springs for a swim. The spring-fed pool averages about 68–70°F, so that first jump into the water can be a proper shock after a warm Austin afternoon.

Zilker Park

Zilker Metropolitan Park

Once you're dry, walk through Zilker while the light starts getting softer. You don't need a huge hike here. Just wander, sit for a while, and watch the city move around you.

South Congress

South Congress Avenue

–

Head back to SoCo for dinner. I'd keep it casual tonight. Tacos, barbecue, or anything with a patio will do.

Congress Avenue Bridge

–

If you're visiting during bat season, this is the part of the Austin trip I'd refuse to skip. Mexican free-tailed bats usually emerge around sunset from late March into early fall, and the crowd starts gathering well before the show.

Austin Motel

Back to the hotel. Day one is done, and tomorrow has plenty waiting.

South Congress

South Congress Avenue

Roovio — Google —
–

Breakfast tacos and coffee. Nothing complicated. I'd rather spend the morning eating something good than sitting through a hotel buffet.

Texas Capitol

Roovio — Google —
–

Take a cab downtown and start with the Capitol. The grounds are surprisingly pleasant, and the building itself gives you that first proper taste of Texas history.

Bullock Texas State History Museum

Roovio — Google —
–

Walk over to the Bullock instead of getting back into the car. This is where the history from the Capitol starts making more sense.

University of Texas at Austin

Roovio — Google —
–

Grab lunch around campus and take a look at the Longhorn side of town. If there happens to be a game or major event during your Austin visit, expect the area to feel completely different.

Blanton Museum of Art

Roovio — Google —
–

By now, the Texas heat may be making its argument. I'd take the hint and spend the afternoon indoors. The Blanton gives the day a completely different rhythm from the Capitol and stadium.

Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium

If there's an event on, this is your chance to experience the Longhorn atmosphere. If not, take a look around the stadium area and keep moving. You don't need to manufacture a football experience when there isn't a game.

Austin Motel

–

Back to the hotel. Shower, change, lie down for twenty minutes. This little gap matters more than squeezing another attraction into the schedule.

East Sixth Street

East 6th Street

Roovio — Google —
–

Take a taxi into East Sixth for dinner and drinks. I'd choose this over spending the whole night on the busiest downtown strip. It feels more relaxed, and there are plenty of places to stop without planning the entire evening.

Live Music

East 6th Street

Roovio — Google —
–

Find a show that's actually playing that night and go. That's one part of an Austin itinerary I wouldn't over-plan. The fun is often in discovering the place you weren't originally looking for.

4

Lady Bird Lake

Roovio — Google —
–

Start slowly. Walk part of the Butler Trail while the morning is still comfortable. Downtown Austin rises right behind the water, so you get the skyline without standing in the middle of downtown traffic.

Lady Bird Lake

–

If the weather is good, rent a kayak or paddleboard. If you're still feeling yesterday's walking in your legs, skip the water and keep the morning on the trail. The Austin trip doesn't have to punish you.

MezzeMe

Roovio — Google —
–

Stop for lunch at The Triangle in North Austin before heading farther out. I'd rather eat now than find myself hungry halfway through the afternoon.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Roovio — Google —
–

Take a short ride out to the Wildflower Center for a change of scenery. After two days of downtown, museums, crowds, and traffic, the trails and gardens feel like hitting the reset button.

Jo's Coffee South Congress

Jo's Coffee – South Congress

Roovio — Google —
–

Take a ride back toward the city and leave the afternoon open. Grab a coffee, sit somewhere with a patio, or go back to the hotel for a quick rest.

South Congress

South Congress Avenue

Roovio — Google —
–

For the final dinner of this Austin itinerary, I'd stay near the hotel rather than crossing town again. There's no prize for spending your last evening in traffic.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Roovio — Google —
–

Take a cab to the airport for the flight back to Chicago. If your flight is later, keep the evening flexible and squeeze in one last Austin meal.
